Some background on the NWA & NWA Southwest..... The National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) is the largest governing body for a group of independent professional wrestling promotions and sanctions various NWA championships in the United States. The NWA has been in operation since 1948. Prior to 1986, it acted as the sole governing body for most of professional wrestling, operating as a talent and brand name franchiser for the inter-regional "territory" system. Texas has long been noted as one of the major NWA "hotbeds" for four decades; but in 1986, the NWA's presence in Texas ended when it withdrew from the NWA to go under different independent labels. The NWA did not return to Texas again until 1998, when Promoter Ken Taylor revived the NWA brand and its history back into Texas as NWA Southwest. He was awarded the State of Texas in January 1998, and later awarded the State of Oklahoma. The first NWA Southwest show occurred February 27, 1998, in Dallas, Texas. The second show featured Mil Mascaras and Rod Price drew over 600 fans. NWA Southwest opened up its own 10,000 square-footTexas Indoor Arena in April 1998 in North Richland Hills and ran weekly shows there until nearly 2003. NWA Southwest has hosted shows at such major venues as Texas Motor Speedway, Dallas' Bronco Bowl Arena, Corpus Christi's American Bank Center & Memorial Coliseum, San Antonio's Sunset Station, and Livingston's A-C Multi-Purpose Center. In 2002, NWA-SW hosted the 54th Anniversary Show & Convention at Memorial Coliseum ib Corpus Christi. Since 1998 to present, NWA Southwest has hosted seven NWA World Heavyweight title matches, five NWA World Tag Team title matches, one NWA World Women's title match, one NWA World Junior title match, one National Heavyweight title match, two North American Heavyweight title matches, and one NWA North American Tag Team title match. The most recent NWA World title match hosted by NWA Southwest was a World Heavyweight title match on October 13, 2007, in Irving Texas. The legendary NWA Texas Heavyweight Belt, in particular, represents one of most coveted and prestigious belts in all of wrestling. From the early 50's through 1986, it was the most sought after and prized belt in the USA Southwest and played a major role with title matches packing arenas throughout the State. Among the Parade of Stars and Legends who have been on NWA Southwest shows include Dan "The Beast" Severn, Kevin Northcutt, Lance Cade, Hernandez, Abdullah The Butcher, Adam Pearce, Steve Corino, Mil Mascaras, AJ Styles, Jeff Jarrett, Brent Albright, Blue Demon, El Santo, Terry "Bam, Bam"Gordy, Jake "The Snake" Roberts, Necro Butcher, Naoya Ogawa, Paul London, Ron Killings, JP Black Rob Conway, L.A. It was also added to the now defunct UATV network in 2002 airing in about 60 cities nationwide. NWA Southwest, now over 500 shows down the road, and in its 11th year of business celebrated an Anniversary on March 21, 2009. No other company in Texas or Oklahoma comes remotely close in size and a true statewide organization with bonafide State Champions for six decades.
